Story of London: Khadambi Asalache house
Wed, 17 Jun 2009 09:26:43 GMT
As part of the Mayor's month-long Story of London festival, Black Cultural Archives and the National Trust present ‘sneak preview’ tours of the home of the Kenyan poet and artist Khadambi Asalache.
This magical and beautiful house is decorated throughout with wooden fretwork hand-carved by Khadambi over 20 years. The symbolism and images depicted within the fretwork, combined with Khadambi's personal collection of artefacts and artworks tell a fascinating story of the poet making his home in London.
After the tour, visitors will be invited to take part in a discussion on the themes inherent in the house.
ADDRESS:
Khadambi Asalache House, London, SW8
(those selected from the ticket ballot will be given the full address - for security reasons we are unable to do this for publicity)
NEAREST TUBE:
Vauxhall
HOW TO BOOK:
Due to the size of the house numbers are strictly limited; as such tickets will be issued by ballot.
If you would like to apply please e-mail to tickets@bcaheritage.org.uk by WEDNESDAY 24 JUNE giving your name, contact details and the number of tickets you are applying for (maximum 2 per application).
Please type ‘Story of London’ in the subject line.
Tour will be at 3pm. The combined tour and discussion will last approx. 60-90 minutes.
Please note: The rooms in the house are quite small and there are steep stairs and no storage areas. Please do not wear high heels as these damage the delicate floor surfaces.
